The Harold D. Thomas Foundation was born from the deep love and enduring legacy of a father lost too soon—a brilliant man who quietly battled mental illness throughout his life. His children grew up shielded by family from many of their dad’s struggles; yet, their dad remained a guiding presence, helping with homework, celebrating their milestones, and teaching them to honor, respect, and love him unconditionally, even when life became challenging.
Growing up, his children wrestled with the pain of the absence of their father, the weight of inner family rumors, and cruel labels: drug user, crazy, sick in the head, terrible. All of his children stayed connected and spent time truly getting to know their father, learning about his struggles and, eventually, becoming more actively involved with their father's life and caregiving to help better understand and meet his needs. Despite ongoing negativity and denial from some family members, it became clear that their dad had a genius mind suffering from a mental illness, not simply defined by the stigma others placed on him.
His funeral revealed the truth to everyone who attended. Their father was much more than the rumors suggested. He was a brilliant and compassionate soul who navigated life’s challenges to the best of his ability, leaving a profoundly positive impact on the people he encountered. His story inspired his children to pursue philanthropy, ultimately leading to the founding of this organization in his honor.
The Harold D. Thomas Foundation exists for families, children, and loved ones who feel lost, confused, or burdened by the biases and misunderstandings surrounding mental illness. We are here to shed light on the truth, to offer compassion and support, and to honor the dignity and complexity of every person affected by mental health challenges. Our father’s legacy is one of brilliance, resilience, and love—and through this foundation, we strive to ensure that no one faces this journey alone or unseen.
